Genealogy

In our family, the family name Vilmusenaho was first used by Matti Paavalinpoika (son of Paavali/Paul) Sipola (b. 12.1.1839, parents: Paavali Heikinpoika (son of Heikki) Sipola and Maria Juhontytär (daughter of Juho).

Part of our family has been living in Luohua of Paavola at least at the end of 1700's. Luohua, Paavola, belonged to the Siikajoki region (pitäjä) those days. It is probable that the Sipolas had moved to Luohua from Sipola village at Rantsila where this family name appears in the church files for a long time. The original home village of Vilmusenaho family might have been Sipola, Rantsila.

Paavo Sipola's son Matti Paavalinpoika Sipola changed his family name when moving to Aho farm at Luohua. Aho belonged to the previous lands of Vilmunen farm and this gave a new name for the family: Vilmusenaho (Aho of Vilmunen). This way, Matti was the first to use this name.

Matti was married to Maria Matilda from Siikajoki, daughter at Kaijankoski farm in 1863. Family name Vilmusenaho was after that used by Matti's sons, brothers Juho Henrik and Matti Emil Vilmusenaho /1/.

Sources:

/1/ Yrjö Vilmusenaho's notes. The notes use as a source the genealogy of Paavali Sipola (1793-1865) prepared by the vicar of Paavola, Reverend Väinö Paalasmaa. In addition, Yrjö has received information from his father Juho Vilmusenaho's cousin Otto Sipola. Yrjö interviewed him in 1945. At that time, Otto lived in Järvelä farm on the back of Luohua. One winter evening, he told about his grandfather Paavo Sipola, who was especially known as a soothsayer, as well as other old stories from the village of Luohua. Yrjö emphasizes that he did not try to do an actual genealogy.
